Real Madrid Thrash Manchester City as Valverde Scores a Hat-Trick

Whenever Real Madrid play in the UEFA Champions League, the atmosphere around them carries “special vibrations.” Nights like this at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium make that idea feel very real. Perhaps there really is something magical beneath the Bernabéu. Because sometimes Real Madrid look unstoppable like no team in the world could stand in their way.

You could assemble a dream squad from across Europe: Lamine Yamal from FC Barcelona, Harry Kane from FC Bayern Munich, Ousmane Dembélé from Paris Saint-Germain, and many other stars. Add the best coach you can find. Even then, it might still not be enough to beat the 15-time European champions on their own ground.

That’s exactly the feeling on Wednesday night. Real Madrid were missing key names like Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, while Rodrygo, a player who has hurt Manchester City in the past, was also unavailable.

On the opposite bench stood Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest coaches in the game. Meanwhile, Real Madrid were led by Álvaro Arbeloa, still relatively new at this level.

However, the spotlight belonged to Federico Valverde.

The Uruguayan midfielder produced the performance of his life, scoring a stunning hat-trick before halftime and giving Real Madrid a huge advantage in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Valverde may not be considered the fastest, the most technically gifted, or the most creative player in the world. Yet on this night he looked unstoppable.

His first goal came after a quick transition that started with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who moments earlier had stopped a dangerous City attack. Valverde burst forward, raced past the defense and calmly finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The second goal had shades of Karim Benzema, a clinical finish after a move initiated by Courtois and completed with a pass from Vinícius Júnior.

And the third? That one felt almost surreal, like a moment inspired by Zinedine Zidane. A spectacular strike, the kind Spaniards call a golazo.

Real Madrid could have won by an even bigger margin. Early in the second half Vinícius missed a penalty that Donnarumma saved, while Courtois continued to shine at the other end with key stops against City’s attackers.

To be fair, the visitors started the match strongly. Players like Jérémy Doku and Antoine Semenyo caused problems for the Madrid defense, and Bernardo Silva also came close.

However, when Manchester City failed to take their chances, Real Madrid did what they always seem to do in the Champions League.

They punished them. Because when Real Madrid play in Europe’s biggest competition, those “special vibrations” still seem very real.
