Mass brawl in Brazil sees 23 players sent off

The Mineiro Championship final between Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro ended in major controversy after a mass brawl broke out on the pitch. Cruzeiro won the match 1–0 at the Mineirão Stadium, however the result was overshadowed by chaotic scenes involving players from both teams.

The chaos began after a clash between Atlético goalkeeper Everson and Cruzeiro midfielder Christian. Referee Matheus Candançan explained that after the foul, the goalkeeper knocked his opponent down, ran toward him and struck him in the face with a knee, which immediately triggered a mass confrontation.

According to the referee’s report, a total of 23 players were sent off following the incident.

The report also described Christian’s challenge, stating that he struck the opponent in the head with excessive force while the ball was already in the goalkeeper’s possession. Moments later, players from both teams rushed in and the situation escalated into a full-scale brawl, making it impossible for the referee to show the red cards immediately.

The altercation started inside Atlético’s penalty area. After the collision, Everson lost his temper, pushed Christian to the ground and jumped on him with his knees. Cruzeiro players quickly reacted, and within seconds the entire pitch descended into chaos.

Several players became involved in the fight, including Atlético star Hulk. Speaking after the match, Hulk admitted the scenes were embarrassing. He said it was sad to witness such violence and stressed that footballers mustn’t set such an example because it can have consequences worldwide.

Cruzeiro coach Tite, meanwhile, thanked the club’s supporters after the victory, saying he respects and appreciates the fans and believes that respect, hard work, dignity and honesty are what truly matter. The incident is now expected to lead to disciplinary action, with Brazilian football authorities likely to open a full investigation into the events at Mineirão.

Interesting the 2 Brazilian sides that combined for 23 red cards during a brawl will play again in less than a month. As of now, everybody who was part of the brawl will be eligible to play in that game.
